Tempest Keep, also known as The Eye, is one of the most iconic raids in TBC Classic. Nay, the entirety of World of Warcraft. Not only is this the raid where you get to face off against Kael’thas Sunstrider but Tempest Keep is also famous for containing the highly sought-after Ashes of Al’ar mount. The final boss encounter is also very memorable and something you have to experience at least once. Unfortunately, getting inside The Eye is anything but easy. Just like with other raids in Burning Crusade Classic, you’ll first need to complete a lengthy attunement chain before you are granted access. But don’t worry because this Tempest Keep attunement guide will walk you through the entire process.
Before we begin it’s worth noting that the Tempest Keep attunement is comprised of two parts, the first of which is significantly longer than the second. Needless to say, you’ll also need a level 70 character to get started along with access to Heroic dungeons and a flying mount. If you don’t want to waste any time farming you can simply buy Safe WoW gold from a trustworthy website like LootWoWGold and start working on the attunement asap. Speaking of which, there’s a lot to cover here so let’s not waste anymore time and jump straight into it.
The Cipher of Damnation is a lengthy quest chain that acts as a prerequisite to the actual Tempest Keep attunement. That’s right, you need to do a quest chain in order to unlock another quest chain that unlocks the raid. That’s just TBC Classic for you. In any case, this prerequisite chain is split into five different parts so let’s look at them in order.
Your journey starts with the quest The Hand of Gul’dan, which can be picked up in Shadowmoon Village if you’re Horde or Wildhammer Stronghold if you’re Alliance. In turn, the quest sends you to speak to Earthmender Torlok in Shadowmoon Valley who will give you the next quest, Enraged Spirits of Fire and Earth. This quest and the following ones will task you with capturing various elemental spirits around the zone. Complete everything until Torlok is satisfied with your performance and sends you to the north of the region to speak with Oronok Torn-heart. Oronok will give you a series of quests as well, culminating with The Cipher of Damnation – Truth and History. After a bit of roleplay, you will be ready to continue the Tempest Keep attunement.
Next, Oronok will send you to Coilskar Point to find and speak to his son, Grom’Tor. The quest you’ll need to pick up from him is called The Cipher of Damnation – Grom’Tor’s Charge. This is a simple fetch quest that requires you to loot a Coilskar Chest. The chest can spawn pretty much anywhere around Coilskar Point and requires the Coilskar Chest Key to unlock. Kill Coilskar mobs in the area until one of them drops the key and then find the chest. Inside, you will find the First Fragment of the Cipher of Damnation. You can now return to Oronok for the next part of the Tempest Keep attunement.
Speak to Oronok and he will now send you to find his second son, Ar’tor, who can be found at the Illidari Point in the west of the region. Ar’tor asks you to kill Painmistress Gabrissa, who is located nearby, and loot the Crystalline Key from her corpse. Upon returning with the key, Ar’tor will send you to recover another item, Lohn’goron, Bow of the Torn-heart. This bow has a chance of dropping from any of the demons around Illidari Point so keep farming them until you get the item. Return the item and you will receive a third quest, The Cipher of Damnation – Ar’tor’s Charge, which requires you to collect the Second Fragment of the Cipher of Damnation from a demon called Veneratus the Many. The mob roams around Illidari Point so make sure to search around the area until you find it. However, don’t use flying because you will be accompanied by an NPC for this quest who is known to disappear if you take flight. Once you have recovered the second fragment return to Ar’tor for your next task.
By now you probably know where this is going. Ar’tor will send you back to Oronok who will in turn task you with finding his third son, Borak. You can find Borak at Eclipse Point and pick up the quest Of Thistleheads and Eggs… while you’re there. This is a simple fetch quest that has you collecting a Rotten Arakkoa Egg. The egg must then be brought to Tobias the Filth Gorger in Shattrath who will give you a Bundle of Bloodthistle and send you back to Borak. The NPC will give you a couple of additional quests to complete culminating with The Cipher of Damnation – Borak’s Charge, which requires you to kill Ruul the Darkener near Dragonmaw Fortress. Ruul is an elite mob so make sure to bring some friends along before you attempt to fight him. Once he’s dead, you can loot him for the Third Fragment of the Cipher of Damnation. Take the fragment back to Oronok.
With all three fragments now delivered you can finally advance the Tempest Keep attunement chain. Oronok uses the fragments to put together the Cipher and tasks you with summoning Cyrukh the Firelord. This massive elite boss is no pushover so you’ll need to put together a good party if you hope to take it down. Once dead, you can return to Earthmender Torlok to complete the prerequisite for the TBC Classic raid.
Shortly after completing the prerequisite chain, you will receive a Letter from Shattrath in your mailbox. Read the letter and go find Khadgar in Shattrath to receive the quest The Tempest Key. The quest sends you to the Naaru A’dal who tasks you with completing four trials to prove that you are worthy of receiving the key.
The first trial involves doing a timed run of The Shattered Halls on Heroic difficulty. The goal is to reach the end of the dungeon and stop the Shattered Hand Executioner before he kills any of the prisoners. You’ll only have about 55 minutes at your disposal to do this so time is of the essence. If you manage to kill the executioner in time, he will drop an item called the Unused Axe of the Executioner. Bring this item to A’dal to complete the first trial and pick up the second one.
The second trial requires you to recover two items but there are no gimmicks this time around. The first item is Kalithresh’s Trident and drops from the final boss of The Steamvault, Warlord Kalithresh. You’ll also need to kill Murmur, the final boss of Shadow Labyrinth in order to get the second item, Murmur’s Essence. Keep in mind that both dungeons need to be completed on Heroic difficulty. With both items in your possession, you can return to A’dal to continue the Tempest Keep attunement.
This next trial sends you to The Arcatraz Heroic where you have to defeat the final boss of the dungeon, Harbringer Skyriss. However, there’s a catch. At one point during the encounter Millhouse Manastorm will escape from his cage and you need to make sure the NPC doesn’t die during the boss fight. If you manage to rescue Millhouse you can return to A’dal and have it give you the next and final trial.
As you might expect, this last trial involves killing the final boss of Magtheridon’s Lair. Luckily, this is one of the few TBC Classic raids that doesn’t require an attunement chain to unlock so you can simply go in whenever you want. Another piece of good news is that the raid only contains a single boss, Magtheridon himself. The encounter can be pretty difficult on a fresh level 70 but you shouldn’t have much trouble if you’re going in with a decent party. Once you manage to take down the boss return to A’dal to complete the trial and receive your reward.
Having proven your worth by completing all the Naaru’s trials, you can now speak to A’dal to receive The Tempest Key. Congratulations! You have completed the Tempest Keep attunement and can now enter The Eye to face off against Kael’thas Sunstrider. As an added bonus, A’dal will also reward you with a powerful epic ring upon completing his trials, the Phoenix-fire Band. The ring gives +34 stamina and +30 fire resistance. Make sure to put it on when you visit The Eye because you’re going to need a lot of fire resistance while you’re there.
