TBC Classic attunements are notoriously complicated but also extremely fun. Whereas in later expansions you don’t have to do much (or anything) to unlock access to most raids, in TBC Classic you have to complete a number of quest chain and dungeons to be given entry. However, it is worth noting that some attunements are more difficult than others to complete and in this article we’re going to guide you through two examples found on the opposite sides of the spectrum. Namely, the Mount Hyjal attunement and the Black Temple attunement.
Before you start your journey make sure you have a level 70 character and access to Heroic dungeons. A flying mount is also mandatory for parts of some quests. Don’t hesitate to buy safe WoW gold if you want to speed up the process because you’ll need the funds to unlock flying, buy certain items to turn in for reputations needed to unlock Heroics, and get consumables and gear needed to survive some of the most difficult encounters. Equally important, make sure you have unlocked access and completed the previous raids in TBC Classic, including Karazhan, Serpentshrine Cavern, and Tempest Keep.
Mount Hyjal has one of the most straightforward attunement chains in TBC Classic. However, that doesn’t necessarily mean that the attunement is easy. In fact, quite the opposite. Although you only need two items in order to unlock the raid, these drop from the final bosses of two other raids. Namely, Serpentshrine Cavern and Tempest Keep. Both raids have attunement chains of their own, and pretty lengthy ones at that. In turn, Serpentshrine Cavern requires you to be attunement to Karazhan. In other words, you’ll need to do TBC Classic raids in a certain order if you want to progress and there’s no getting around that.
Assuming you already have access to the previously mentioned raids, you can begin the Mount Hyjal Attunement by speaking to Soridormi inside the Caverns of Time. But since this is TBC Classic, you’ll first need to become Revered with the Keepers of Time before Soridormi’s quest becomes available. The only reliable way to increase your reputation with the faction is to grind Old Hillsbrad Foothills and Black Morass, preferably on Heroic difficulty. Once you have the required reputation Soridormi will offer you the quest The Vials of Eternity. The quest requires you to collect Vashj’s Vial Remnant from Lady Vashj in Serpentshrine Cavern and Kael’s Vial Remnant from Kael’thas Sunstrider in The Eye. Return both vials to Soridormi to complete your Mount Hyjal attunement.
While the Mount Hyjal attunement only involves some rep grind and completing two raids, this next one is significantly more complicated. The Black Temple attunement takes you on a journey across Outland as you assist Akama and Maiev Shadowsong with gaining access to the temple. The attunement is split into three different chains. Let’s take a look at each of them individually.
The Black Temple attunement starts with the quest Tablets of Baa’ri, which can be picked up at either the Altar of Sha’tar or the Sanctum of the Stars depending on whether you want to side with the Aldor or the Scryers. The quest is very simple and only requires you to collect some tablet fragments from the Ruins of Baa’ri. Completed it and then go back to turn it in to receive the next quest, Oronu the Elder. You will now have to go back to the Ruins of Baa’ri and kill the titular mob. Kill Oronu the Elder and loot the Orders From Akama from his body. Go back to the quest giver and return the item.
Next up you will receive a quest called The Ashtongue Corruptors, which involves finding four Medallion Fragments from NPCs scattered around Shadowmoon Valley. The NPCs and their locations are as follows:
- Eykenen <Corruptor of Earth>, Fel Pits at around 51.0, 52.8
- Haalum <Corruptor of Air>, Netherwind Pass at around 57.0, 73.6
- Lakaan <Corruptor of Water>, Coilskar Point at around 49.8, 23.0
- Uylaru <Corruptor of Fire>, Fel Pits at around 48.2, 39.6
The order in which you kill these NPCs and collect the fragments is not important so feel free to take them down whoever you wish. The NPCs are regular non-elite mobs and killing them solo should not be an issue regardless of your class. With all four fragments in your inventory head back to Anchorite Ceyla (Aldor) or Arcanist Thelis (Scryers) to continue the Black Temple attunement chain.
The next quest in the series is called The Warden’s Cage and takes place south of the Ruins of Baa’ri. The goal here is to interrogate an NPC called Sanoru on the whereabouts of Akama. Complete the quest and Sanoru will give you a follow-up called Proof of Allegiance, which requires you to kill the demon Zandras. The demon patrols around the Warden’s Cage and shouldn’t be too difficult to find. Slay it to complete the quest and the location of Akama will be revealed to you. To continue the Black Temple attunement, go and speak to Akama in the area below the Warden’s Cage.
The next quest in the chain involves finding an NPC called Seer Udalo, who can be found inside The Arcatraz in the Tempest Keep complex. Udalo is in a room just before the final boss, Harbringer Skyriss, so you’ll need to find a party if you hope to make your way there. Unless you’re playing a stealth class of course. Regardless of how you get there, Seer Udalo will be lying on the floor seemingly dead when you find him, however, you can easily revive him with a click of a button. Speak to Udalo to turn in the quest and pick up the next one called A Mysterious Portent.
Leave The Arcatraz and make your way back to Akama to turn in the quest given to you by Udalo. Akama will now send you to The Ata’mal Terrace to retrieve an item called the Heart of Fury from Shadowlord Deathwail. The Ata’mal Terrace is the northern part of the Black Temple and the boss can be found at around 71.6, 35.6. Shadowlord Deathwail is an elite orc who can be soloed by certain classes provided they have decent gear. If you don’t want to take any chances, it’s probably a good idea to take one or two buddies with you to help you kill the boss. Once you do, loot him to acquire the Heart of Fury and bring it back to Akama at the Warden’s Cage. Akama will fuse the Heart of Fury with the Medallion of Karabor and sends you off to Shattrath to bring it to A’dal as part of the final quest of this portion, Akama’s Promise.
The Black Temple attunement seemingly ends at this point, however, appearances can be deceiving. Next up, you have to venture into the Serpentshire Cavern raid and make your way to the fourth boss, Fathom-Lord Karathress. Upon killing the Naga, an NPC called Seer Olum will spawn and give you the quest The Secret Compromised, which sends you to Akama at the Warden’s Cage yet again. Upon turning it in, Akama asks you to enter Tempest Keep and kill Al’ar while disguised as an Ashtongue. You’ll need to use the Ashtongue Cowl, an item given to you by Akama, in order to disguise yourself. Defeat Al’ar and return to Akama for the next quest in the series.
Akama will now task you with recovering the Time-Phased Phylactery as part of the quest An Artifact From the Past. The phylactery drops from Rage Winterchill, the first boss of the Battle of Mount Hyjal raid. We already discussed the Mount Hyjal attunement earlier so hopefully you’ve already done if you’ve made it this far into the article. Otherwise, now would be the perfect time to get started. Once you have the item return to Akama to pick up the quest The Hostage Soul. Now you’re finally in the final stage of the Black Temple attunement.
Speak to A’dal in Shattrath City to turn in The Hostage Soul and pick up the quest Entry Into the Black Temple. As part of the quest, you’ll need to go the entrance of the Black Temple and speak to another Naaru called Xi’ri who gives you the final quest, A Distraction for Akama. Ensure that Maiev and Akama make their way safely into the Black Temple to complete the quest and then return to Xi’ri to receive your reward. Congratulations! You have now completed your Black Temple attunement.
Xi’ri gives you an epic neck piece called Medallion of Karabor that unlocks entrance to the raid. The medallion initially comes with +49 stamina and +40 shadow resistance and can be upgraded to the Blessed Medallion of Karabor by completing a series of quests you can pick up inside the Black Temple. The upgraded version doesn’t give the medallion any extra stats but it does grant you the ability to teleport to the raid’s entrance on a 15-minute cooldown.
