Not only that but professions in the expansions are more useful and more important than before, so it pays to consider your options carefully before making your choice. Although you can switch professions at any point you want, you will end up losing all the progress you have made with your previous ones. The first to keep in mind is that in World of Warcraft Burning Crusade Classic every player can only have up to two main professions at any one time. In addition to those, players can also learn all available secondary professions, of which there are three to choose from in this expansion. Main professions are generally grouped into two categories – gathering professions and production professions. Under normal circumstances, you would want to have one of each for maximum efficiency, though there are some exceptions to this rule. Just as their name indicates, these professions allow you to gather various raw materials that are required by production professions. Smelting creates bars that are required by professions like Blacksmithing and Engineering. Mining gives you a lot of options because it pairs well with not just one but three crafting professions.
Skinning makes profession picking in WoW a breeze for players who don’t want to invest too much time into gathering. There’s no need to go out of your way to collect skins because you’ll have to kill plenty of animals anyway while doing quests and running dungeons. That makes Skinning one of the easiest professions to level up since it requires very little effort on your part as long as you remember to skin any eligible creatures you kill. As an added bonus, you can also skin creatures killed by others, making the whole thing even easier. Just remember to buy a Skinning Knife as soon as you learn the profession. Skinning pairs well with Leatherworking.
Also known as crafting professions, production professions allow you to take the raw materials gathered by herbalists, miners, and leatherworkers and turn them into a wide range of useful items. These include everything from potions and enchants to weapons, armors, and even mounts. Of course, the items you can craft depend on your production profession. The class you’re playing will, to some extent, dictate the production profession you’ll want to learn, which in turn, will dictate the gathering profession.
Alchemy is the art of brewing various consumables like potions, elixirs, and flasks. There are even a couple of trinkets introduced in TBC Classic that can only be used by Alchemists. Players with this profession can also create special Cauldrons that can be placed on the ground and used by their entire raid group to acquire a variety of temporary potions. This is quite similar to the Warlock’s Soulwell or the Mage’s Refreshment Table. Alchemy is by far one of the most profitable professions in World of Warcraft. These materials are then used to enchant items with additional permanent proprieties, usually in the form of extra stats. The quality of the materials depends on the quality of the disenchanted gear, though it’s important to note that grey or white items cannot be disenchanted. Enchanting is a pretty costly profession because it requires you to destroy items that you could otherwise sell, but it’s also one of the most self-sufficient ones as it does need to be paired with a gathering profession. Instead, players usually pair it with Tailoring. Blacksmithing and Leatherworking can work just fine as well, however, Enchanting is generally most useful to cloth wearers.
Recommended Classes: Mage, Priest, and Warlock.
If you’re worried about the fun factor when considering your profession Engineering is just what you’re looking for. Engineers are able to create a wide variety of crazy gadgets and contraptions, including quite a few that give you an advantage in PVP scenarios. In fact, it’s pretty much mandatory for PVP. In addition to gadgets, Engineering also lets you craft powerful goggles, trinkets, and even a couple of mounts. The mounts are BoE and can be sold for a lot of gold on the auction house. To make things even more interesting, the profession has two specializations – Gnomish Engineering and Goblin Engineering – each of which gives you access to even more fun and unique items.
Recommended Classes: Any. Preferred by Miners.
As mentioned earlier, Jewelcrafting is the new profession introduced to World of Warcraft with Burning Crusade. It is meant to complement the new socketing system that was also added in the expansion. Somewhat similar to Enchanting, sockets are yet another way of boosting your gear with the use of additional stats. The special gems that go into these sockets can only be created by Jewelcrafters, who can also make other items like necklaces, rings, and trinkets. Jewelcrafting is pretty tedious at first because many of the early items are not very useful, however, the profession becomes very useful (and profitable) at max level.
Profession picking in WoW TBC Classic is quite limited if you’re a leather wearer. Indeed, you’re pretty much stuck with Leatherworking paired with Skinning. But that’s not necessarily a bad thing. Leatherworkers can create many useful pieces of gear along with armor reinforcement kits, bags, and the all-powerful drums. Virtually every raid needs one or two Leatherworkers and their drums and the profession can be very profitable if you’re focusing your efforts on crafting and selling bags. Tailors have access to three specializations in Burning Crusade Classic – Mooncloth (for Priests), Shadowcloth (for Warlocks), and Spellcloth (for Mages).

There are three professions in World of Warcraft Burning Crusade Classic that can be picked up by anyone, regardless of their main professions. These are Cooking, Fishing, and First Aid. Fishing is pretty self-explanatory and lets you catch fish that you can then transform into food using Cooking. Keep in mind that you need a Fishing Rod to be able to make use of the profession. The two professions pair well with each other but Cooking can also be used independently as many recipes require ingredients harvested from bears, wolves, and other animals.
Meanwhile, First Aid lets you create bandages using cloth that drops from humanoid enemies. These bandages can be used to heal yourself over time, making them most useful to classes that don’t have healing of their own, such as Warriors and Rogues. First Aid is a good cloth sink for players who aren’t running Tailoring.
All three secondary professions are pretty niche and can be avoided if you don’t want to waste any time on them. If you do want to pick them up, there are some benefits you can look forward to, especially those coming from Cooking. At the end of the day, though, you should focus most of your efforts on your two main professions before investing time into the secondary ones.
