Steps to Create Val’anyr, Hammer of Ancient Kings

Step 1: Collecting Fragments of Val’anyr

To begin, you’ll need to gather 30 Fragments of Val’anyr. These fragments can drop from most bosses in Ulduar, excluding Algalon the Observer. Hard-mode encounters, in particular, increase the chance of obtaining a fragment from reward chests upon defeating those bosses. Additionally, the final boss, Yogg-Saron, will always drop one fragment.

Step 2: Combining the Fragments into a Shattered Fragment of Val’anyr

Once you have collected 30 fragments, combine them to create a Shattered Fragment of Val’anyr. Afterward, you’ll receive a quest called “Ancient History.”

1. Use the Ulduar teleporter to reach the Antechamber of Ulduar.
2. Proceed towards the Iron Council, then turn left to access the Archive Console.
3. Complete the quest “Ancient History” to unlock the next step, which is the quest “Val’anyr, Hammer of Ancient Kings.”

Note: In this stage, “heroic mode” for Yogg-Saron refers to his hard-mode encounter, not an actual heroic difficulty of Ulduar, as Ulduar only has normal and Timewalking difficulties. To activate hard mode, do not talk to any of the Keepers before engaging Yogg-Saron. If you avoided talking to them during your fragment collection, simply continue this approach after accepting the quest.

Important: Make sure not to talk to any Keepers.

Step 3: Using the Shattered Fragment on Yogg-Saron During His Deafening Roar

In the final phase of the Yogg-Saron encounter, use the Shattered Fragment of Val’anyr on him when he casts Deafening Roar—which occurs in the third phase after you destroy his brain in the portal phase and return to the main fight area.

Key Tips for This Phase:

• Avoid Insanity Drain: When Yogg-Saron uses Lunatic Gaze, turn away to avoid losing sanity.
• Stay Clear of Adds: Yogg-Saron will frequently summon adds that may stick to you, so avoid using large-area AoE attacks.
• Close Range for Fragment Use: Stand close to Yogg-Saron with him targeted, as the Shattered Fragment has a short casting range.
• Wait if Necessary: If you miss the first Deafening Roar, you’ll need to wait until Yogg-Saron casts it again.
• Be Cautious of Direct Damage Abilities: Avoid using high-damage abilities that could accidentally kill Yogg-Saron prematurely. If he dies without you using the fragment, you’ll have to wait until the next weekly reset to try again.

To confirm if Yogg-Saron has absorbed the fragment, check if he gains a buff. If he has this buff when defeated, you’ll be able to retrieve the Reforged Hammer of Ancient Kings from the loot chest.

Step 4: Completing the Quest at the Archive Console

Once you have the reforged hammer, return to the Archive Console in the Antechamber of Ulduar to complete the final quest step. Congratulations! You now possess Val’anyr, Hammer of Ancient Kings, a legendary weapon symbolizing power and prestige.
